Why It's Called Two Soups

One of my all time favourite comedy sketches is Victoria Wood's 'Two Soups'. In it Julie Walters plays a terrible waitress attempting to serve two unlucky customers. I love it, not just 'cos it's funny, but it's based on a real life experience that Julie Walters and Victoria Wood had in a restaurant.

The waitress is real.

Whatever your feelings on hospitality, the root of them is probably this; it needs to be done well. This thought then sends us down one of two paths; either we kill ourselves sourcing organically farmed, British assured, Michelin starred dishes, or we just don't bother doing it at all.

What makes 'Two Soups' funny is the waitress blindly carries on regardless of how bad it's going. She is undeterred in her role. She soldiers on in her duty as a waitress. And she's awful at it. While many may imagine themselves as the next Mary Berry, the 'Two Soups' waitress is most often the peak of my hostess skills.

I'm writing this after 4 long months of Lockdown - which I personally, have quite enjoyed. But I'm now thinking about re-entry into life again. Wouldn't it be nice to stay in my pjs on my sofa waving to people on Zoom?

The Bible says not...

and while I maybe sad about that, the Bible calls me to find a way back.
